Les verbes du 1er groupe
First-Group Verbs (-ER)
In French, first-group verbs are the verbs that end in -ER in the infinitive form.
They are very common and easy to conjugate because they follow regular rules.
Learning how to conjugate them correctly will help you speak and write simple sentences in French.
👉 These verbs are the foundation of French conjugation and appear in many everyday situations.
Present Tense
To conjugate a first-group verb in the present tense:
Remove the -ER ending from the infinitive.
Add the present tense endings:
Je
Tu
Il/Elle
Nous
Vous
Ils/Elles
Examples:
Parler (to speak): Aimer (to like / to love):
Je parle J’aime
Tu parles Tu aimes
Il parle Elle aime
Nous parlons Nous aimons
Vous parlez Vous aimez
Ils parlent Elles aiment
💡 These endings work for all first-group verbs.
⚠️ Remember
First-group verbs are regular, so once you know the rule, you can conjugate many verbs.
The stem of the verb is what remains after removing -ER.
Then, add the correct ending for each subject in the present tense.
