Faire du sport – To play sports / exercise
Il fait froid. – It is cold

Faire is an irregular verb. You need to memorise its forms.
Some expressions with faire cannot be translated literally into English. You need to learn them as phrases.
After faire, the object or activity usually comes next.
Examples:
Je fais attention. (I pay attention.)
Ils font leurs valises. (They pack their suitcases.)
